Piano Lites

Problem

The problem that we identified and chose is the lack of accessible and effective way to learn how to play on musical instruments, more precisely the piano. Learning a musical instrument effectively requires tailored, real-time feedback to address each musician's unique skill level and technique, which is challenging to achieve in self-guided practice without personalized instruction. Traditional methods of learning how to play an instrument, such as YouTube videos, and books do not provide the interactive feedback which is necessary to improve. People who don’t have access to private piano lessons with a tutor should not be limited to resources targeted for a general audience, which are not helpful for an individual’s personal level of knowledge. These people should be able to achieve the same level of skills as someone who has the chance to take private lessons, since their talent does not lie in whether they are able to attend special classes or not. It is important that hobbies, like playing the piano, are as accessible as possible so that people feel encouraged to engage in them at any time during the day.

Solution

The LED-Guided Piano Project is a creative and user-friendly way to learn piano, designed especially for beginners and intermediate players. By placing LEDs directly above the keys, the system visually guides learners by highlighting the notes to play, making the learning process intuitive and fun. This method helps build confidence, improves hand-eye coordination, and speeds up the recognition of note patterns and sequences. Alongside the LED hardware, there's a companion app that enhances the learning experience by offering useful insights, performance statistics, and immediate feedback. The app records your sessions and lets you replay them as videos showing exactly which keys you've pressed. You can practice at your own pace or with different modes such as fast, normal, slow, or even focus specifically on just the right or left hand. Additionally, the app incorporates engaging gamification elements like achievements, experience points, and levels, which motivate users by rewarding progress and milestones. This helps learners visually understand their playing, spot mistakes, and track improvements over time. Users can set personal goals and monitor their progress, turning practice into an enjoyable and motivating activity. Together, the LED-Guided Piano and the app offer an engaging, accessible, and effective way to master piano playing at your own pace.

Mission
